10 Christmas Tips For Cutting Down Holiday Stress and Enjoying the Season

For many modern families, Christmas is magical, wonderful and also filled with stress.  There are so many last minute things to do, traditions to uphold, expectations to be met and relatives to appease.  But how do you minimize the crunch and pressures without sacrificing holiday joys? Here are ten tips to help you get there.

1. Start early. Most people don't plan an important vacation to an exotic locale right before they expect to leave on the trip. They realize to get the best reservations at a great price, they have to make arrangements in advance.  Yet so many of us feel we can crowd all the holiday shopping, baking, card writing, entertaining, decorating and wrapping into a few short weeks.  Give yourself more time to do these things, and it will automatically be less stressful.

2. If you're doing photo Christmas cards, eliminate the big picture taking session.  Instead, look at some of the great pictures you have already taken over the summer or during fall excursions.  If you don't have one fabulous group snapshot of the family, take advantage of the trend in multiple photo holiday cards and use individual pictures you like of each of your kids.

3. Make sure you get your Christmas cards early.  You can find deep discounts right after the holidays on boxed greetings or you can order them in advance online.  As soon as you get them, address all the envelopes, sign and seal and put aside to mail later.

4. Keep a gift idea notebook.  All year long, if a friend or loved one mentions they like something or they have an new interest or hobby, jot it down.  Keep lists of gift possibilities. That way, when it's time to shop for presents, you don't have to spend lots of time wandering around malls, wondering what to buy.

5. In fact, avoid the mall.  Yes, black Friday deals can be very enticing, but that item will probably be long gone by the time you get there.  Even if you haven't done much shopping online in the past, this is the time to do it.  There are even better discounts in internet stores, some with free shipping, and you won't have to deal with the traffic, parking or crowds.

6. Instead of wrapping presents, use dollar store gift bags. Just add a bit of tissue paper and you're done. If you do decide to wrap your gifts, wrap them as you buy them or when the package arrives in the mail. That way you avoid letting them pile up and having to do it all at once.

7. Simplify your decorating.  Pre-lit Christmas trees, wreaths and garland have big impact and are quick and easy to set up. But it might be time to consider cutting back on the little holiday knick knacks that take hours to place around the house.

8. Trade holiday tasks with a friend.  If you enjoy baking cookies, but dread stringing the lights, and she hates the kitchen, but loves to decorate, then swap jobs.  The result is that you're both doing a project you like and passing up one that causes you stress.

9. Lighten your holiday entertaining burden. If your entire family is descending on your house for Christmas, announce it's potluck this year and ask everyone to bring a dish. Or spend a little extra for once and let your favorite deli or gourmet food shop make some of the food.  Remember, there's nothing wrong with slice and bake cookies or cutting other corners.

10. Make a list of all of the holiday things you feel compelled to do every year, and then go over it carefully and see what you can cut out or at least, where you can cut down.  Then, find the one thing on that list that may take a lot of time and effort, but it brings you and your family joy.  Concentrate on doing that with all heart.

If you plan ahead, simplify, ask for help and cut down, you'll be free to enjoy the family traditions you truly love.  Instead of losing sleep, running around and rushing to make it through the holidays, you'll have some extra time to create wonderful new Christmas memories.

Hummingbirds As Pets?

Hummingbirds are fascinating animals and can provide a great deal of entertainment to viewers! Though they are not able to be kept in captivity, if you hang a hummingbird feeder near your home, you can attract the tiny birds. Providing for them and watching them can make them feel like another pet under your care.

Creating the right atmosphere for hummingbirds is very important. Merely hanging a feeder will not be enough to attract the birds. They also require a water source, shelter, and other food sources. Your feeder provides only additional nourishment. Planting flowers that provide nectar will also help attract birds to your feeder.

Hummingbird feeders can be purchased at relatively inexpensive cost. Most feeders consist of a container for the food (a sugar & water mixture), and perches for the birds to stand on while drinking. Using a small feeder, or several small feeders, will work best to attract new hummingbirds to your area.

Food for hummingbird feeders consists of a sugar-water mixture. Use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. For example, add 4 cups of water to a large pot. Add 1 cup of sugar and bring to a boil. Cover the pot and boil 1 to 2 minutes. Let the mixture cool and add it to the hummingbird feeder.

Adding red food coloring to the sugar water is not necessary. Most hummingbird feeders have a red coloring on them somewhere, or you can also attach a red ribbon to the feeder. There haven't been any research studying the affects of food coloring on hummingbirds, so its affects are not known. Therefore, it's a good idea (to be on the safe side) to not use food coloring, as it isn't necessary to attract hummingbirds.

Store any extra food in a refrigerator for up to two weeks (if it gets cloudy, it's no longer safe for feeders) or freeze to store longer.

Cleaning your hummingbird feeder is simple, and it's important not to use bleach or any harsh cleaners which can contaminate your feeder even after rinsing. Use a mild mixture of white vinegar and water and use a bottle brush, pipe cleaners or small brushes to clean every part of the feeder. Your feeder should be cleaned once per week, and the sugar-water should be replaced if it looks cloudy or moldy.

It's not necessary to hang your feeder all year long, unless you live in warm climates. Hummingbirds migrate south for the winter, and they'll leave northern areas anywhere from July through November. You can help migrating birds by leaving your feeder up for a few weeks after you've seen your last hummingbird of the season. The birds can use the nectar to fuel their trip south. Also, if any birds are injured or ill, they may start their journey south later than other birds, and they can use the nectar provided by your feeder. Your feeder can be put back up in the Spring to anticipate the returning birds.

A few more tips: Hummingbirds can be very territorial and may fight over feeders. If you place more than one feeder, try to place them so they're not within viewing distance of one another. Don't use any pesticides or a petroleum-based product to keep ants and bees away, for they may be hazardous to the birds. And don't worry about feeders if you're away from home for a period of time. Hummingbirds have plenty of other sources of food.

Hummingbirds can make great 'pets' as they visit and revisit feeders outside your home. They provide hours upon hours of entertainment!

Christmas - A Young Boys Fondest Memories of Christmas Eve

Christmas was a very special time as a young lad, and it remains so today. With so many fond memories of the past, it's no wonder, and each year we make new memories for the generations to come.

As a young boy, my extended family was very large. It was common for 50 or 60 close relatives to come to my Grandma's house for Sunday lunch. The house was filled with a wonderful energy. These were happy times and remain part of my fondest memories as a child.

Christmas was always a very special time. I remember how me and my cousins became increasingly excited as Christmas Ever grew closer because we know the Christmas Eve Party was going to be a lot of fun and that we were going to get to see all our cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparent. It was common for the Christmas Eve Party to have anywhere from 100 to 150 relatives show up.

That's a lot of people and I can still feel the energy when I close my eyes. Suddenly I am transported back in time. I can hear the laugh of my mother and grandma. I can hear my aunt arguing in fun with my other aunt and I can see my Uncle smoking his favorite cigar. Good times. The Christmas Eve Party was sometime at our house, sometimes at my Grandma's house, and other times at one of my Great Uncle's house.

Everyone brought presents for most everyone else, and there were many gifts for the younger children. There was so much suspense. Box shaking and guessing were plenty of fun as we waited in anticipation of Santa's arrival.

Soft drinks and eggnog we're served along with a dinner of chili, cornbread, and lots of cakes and pies. The food was delicious. The room was a buzz with voices. The air was filled with happiness and as we all over ate; there was plenty of laughing and joking. It was hard to understand as a child how there could be so many yummy food choices all at one time and no one telling us we couldn't have as many helpings of cakes and pies as we wanted. After all it was Christmas - twas the season to be merry.

Around 9:00 PM, my cousins and I would hear a knock on the door. We knew Santa Claus had arrived. As Santa entered the house us kids all went wild - crazy piercing screams could be heard, clapping, and jumping all in anticipation of what was to come next.

It took a bit but we finally quieted in anticipation of what we knew was next to come. Don't get me wrong, we were so excited; we just knew that Santa, with the help of all the teenage kids, would begin to pass out all the presents under the tree once we all settled in our places. Each present had a name on it, and Santa would personally pass out a present to each of the adults, mysteriously calling them by name as if by Christmas magic.

There was fun for all ages. While the children were ecstatic about Santa being there and handing out presents to them, the adults were entertained too. They would scratch their heads trying to figure out whom this Santa was who knew them by name and had personal information on each of them. Fun times for all were had!

My family had all moved from a small village in a rural part of the state to the big city. I learned later when I was older that my grandfather or one my great uncles would go back to that rural village before Christmas to convince one of the adults that had known all the adults twenty or so years ago before the entire clan had moved to the city. None of the family had seen the chosen person since, so it kept the adults guessing.

I have such wonderful fond memories of my childhood and my teenage years. As I gradually went from a child to a young adult, the family traditions become even more important to me. As I grew older and got to participate in guessing the identity of our Santa, I loved the anticipation leading up to Christmas Eve.

My family treated Santa really well. He would be given a room at one of the family elders or put up in a nice hotel for however long he was in the city. Our family usually gave him the choice. And of course, the family paid for all his meals and transportation, as well as any other expenses.

On Christmas Day, he joined the family for Christmas dinner. He would arrive wearing his regular attire and finally the adults would have their answer to the guessing game of the night before. The children didn't even realize there was an extra guest so Santa was never put into jeopardy with the children.

To this day Christmas is a very important time of the year for me. It's a time for family and friends to celebrate and spend time together, and it's a time for the children to believe in Santa. It's a time for all to enjoy the magic of Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!

Aspects Nectar Bar - Rich S - Geneva, IL
Good, basic product. However, because of construction design, the "C" shaped plastic body which encompasses the "roof", back and base (the nectar tray sits in it and is removable) bends quite a bit in the warm weather. I had to insert shims in the front of the nectar tray to try and level it, but it still sags. Also, the leveling pegs on the back don't protrude equidistant to the depth of the suction cup, so I had to modify that to prevent it from being even more off-level. The more off-level it is, the harder it is for the hummingbirds to reach down to the nectar.
The good news is, Aspects says it's no longer available, and is being replaced with a better, more sturdily designed model, which should be available by now. It will also include the NectarGuards, (that work quite effectively) which this model doesn't.

Fun Halloween Games

Make a Spider Web

All you need for this fun game is a ball of black, white, or silver yarn or string and a few kids. Have everyone stand around in a circle. Ask one child to hold one end of the string and then toss the ball to another kid. Each child holds on the string and then tosses it to someone else. Before you know it you'll have a great spider web.

Mummy Contest

Grab a few rolls of toilet paper and match the kids up in pairs. Of course you could also have them choose partners. Ask each pair to decide which one of them will be the mummy and who will do the wrapping. Then - you guessed it - have one of the children wrap the toilet paper around the other, creating a mummy.

You can either make it a contest of speed or one of creativity. For the first, the team that has a completely wrapped mummy first wins. For the second contest, the kids take as long as they need to and you get to play judge and pick the best looking mummy.

Eyeball Race

Start with a plain ping-pong ball for each child. Use a Sharpie marker and draw on it to turn it into an eyeball. You can simple draw the pupil, or for a scarier version, add some red wiggly lines to make the eyeball look bloodshot.

Give each child a spoon and drop one of the eyeballs in each spoon. Now it's time to race. The child that reaches the finish line with the eyeball in the spoon first wins.

There you have it - three fun games you can play with your kids to pass the day until it is time to go trick-or-treating. These games are also a lot of fun at a Halloween party. Get your kids playing them and watch all the spooky fun.

Fun Easter Games For Kids

Easter is all about Easter eggs and new beginnings. Celebrate this wonderful Spring time with fun Easter games for kids. Here are a few old time favorites that are sure to keep the kids busy and having fun.

Hen and Chickens

A leader is chosen for the "hen" and the remainder of the children are "chickens," except one who is supposed to be a chicken hawk.

They stand in a row behind one another and grasp the skirts or coat-tails of the child ahead and then they march along with the "hen" at the head of the line.

The "hawk" stands from six to sixteen feet away (the distance depends on the size of the players and the space to play in, the larger each are the greater the distance may be) watching the parade for a short time, then begins to flop his wings (moves arms in imitation of flying) and calls out, "How many chicks have you?"

The "hen" replies, "four and twenty, shoo! shoo!" The "hawk" shouts, "That's too many. I'll take a few," and then runs after the children trying to touch or "tag" them.

The "hen," of course, tries to protect them by getting them under her wing--when the "chicks" stoop they are supposed to be under their mother's wing and cannot be caught.

The children must not let go of each other's skirts or coat-tails (except when caught, then the captured one steps out of the line and the line is closed up.)

The hen and chickens may run around as much as they like, only they must keep together by holding on to each other's clothes.

This fun Easter games for kids continues until the hawk has caught the hen and chickens--then a different player is chosen for the hawk and the hen.

An Egg Hunt

Hide colored Easter eggs or small candy eggs in various places, in corners, behind curtains, bric a brac, etc., etc.
Provide each child with a small basket or paper bag and at a signal they start to hunt for the hidden eggs.
Allow a certain length of time for the hunting and reward the one who finds the most eggs with a large candy egg.

Easter Bunny Word Scramble

Give each person a pencil and paper with the words "Easter Bunny" written at the top.
They must then write down as many words as they can think of that can be made using the letters contained in the words "Easter bunny".
The person who can think of the most words wins a prize; you can also have prizes for the most unusual words, the least words, the most original words, etc.

Enjoy playing these fun Easter games for kids.

When It's Christmas, Witness Radio City's Christmas Spectacular

Unbelievably, a lot of popular celebrities and entertainers have performed at the mother of all venues: the Radio City Music Hall.

The doors of the Radio City Music Hall first opened back in December, in the year 1932.

Its origins began ironically during the early depression era days of the 1930s. A man named John D. Rockefeller had more than two decades of lease on a ninety million dollar property in midtown Manhattan that was then known as the belt called "speakeasy."

Though the economy was bleak at that time and business opportunities seem dim, Rockefeller plodded on with a brave decision to build a complex property that would eventually leave an amazing impact on New York's cultural and architectural landscape.

He thought that the buildings would be superior enough to attract tenants commercially even in a city that was financially depressed and flooded with a lot of rental vacant space.

Rockefeller then collaborated with RCO (Radio Corporation of America) and Roxy Rothafel (a genius in theater, movies, vaudeville) to create a dream theatre that was completely unlike anything in the whole world.

It was a man named David Sarnoff--an RCA head--that dubbed the place Radio City.

Eventually, Radio City Music Hall has become the place or a palace for every people. It is a beautiful venue that offers entertainment that is high in quality yet with prices that ordinary and anyone could completely afford.

The interior of Radio City Music Hall was created by then a virtual unknown--Donald Deskey.

He entered a competition to design the interior spaces of Radio City, however once visitors entered the lobby, Radio City's Grand Foyer, he was no longer unknown.

It has been said that you are a star only if you have performed at the Radio City Music Hall. With the number of performers who have graced its halls--such as Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra--you surely have arrived if you have performed right along with such celebrity greats.

The creation of the Radio City Music Hall was done with one pure intention in mind: the place was to amuse, entertain, inspire and elevate.

In 1999, Radio City Music Hall underwent a restoration that cost over seventy million dollars within a seven-month period. Everything, including the seats to the ceilings up until the marquee was returned back to their original glory.

It has also been said that Radio City actually steals the whole show. As a critic eloquently puts it, the new Radio City really does not need any performers.

A record three hundred million people have enjoyed Radio City's shows, concerts, movies and events. Everything in Radio City is larger than real life.

It is also the largest indoor theatre in the whole world. The marquee is a whole block long. The auditorium is a hundred and sixty feet from the stage to the back. Its ceiling has a height of eighty-four feet.

Every seat in Radio City Music Hall is a definitely good seat.

Now, Radio City during Christmas is spectacular. Each year, more than one million tourists and visitors include Radio City as their must-visit itinerary as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a feast for the eyes and the ears.

This Christmas show runs for eight weeks and has been a consistent box office success since it began in 1933.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a combination of enchanting Christmas favorites from both the new and the old. This includes the wooden soldiers' parade, the nativity scene as well as new and enchanting delights.

This Christmas, the Rockettes perform in the Radio City Music Hall. Make sure to catch their precision and breathtaking numbers, costumes, dance routine, stage effects, etc.

Overall, Radio City Music Hall is a place for anyone and everyone who wants to have the best Christmas time in their life.

Safety Tips While Taking Your Child Trick Or Treating

The scent of pumpkins and spices are going to be filling the air, and the time for trick-or-treating is on it's way. You have obtained that perfect costume for your little monsters, but now that's only the beginning. Many parents think of the Halloween season as fun, while this might be true; there are so many hazards that can fall in your way if you aren't careful. For this reason, we have opted to give you a few tips on how to have a safe and happy Halloween this year.

Trick or Treat safety tips:

1. Always carry a flashlight when you walk (not run!) Everyone in your family should have a flash light or glow-stick on them. Especially since most costumes tend to be dark, and can be hard to see at night.

2. Stay on the sidewalks that have been provided for you! And make sure to obey the local traffic signals. This would mean, no children darting across busy streets for the next house!

3. Stick to the neighborhoods that you know. Chances are, close neighbors aren't going to be inclined to feed your children something that could potentially hurt them. Going to un-familiar places, can often times lead to disaster. For this reason, you should stay close to yours, grandma and grandpas, and close friends homes!

4. Don't cut across yards or driveways to get to the house, unless it is completely necessary! This can cause trips or bumps that could have been easily been avoided.

5. Make sure you wear a watch that has a light-up face; so that you can keep an eye on your time-line. Making sure to have a previously decided schedule for trick-or-treating.

6. Before you leave the house, make sure that everyone's costumes fit properly. Any costume that drags on the ground, can be potentially dangerous for your child to wear.

7. Make sure that the shoes that your child wears fit properly (yes, even if they are just for the costume). They should also be appropriate for the weather.

8. Have your children pull of their masks while walking, as they can make seeing in the dark more difficult.

9. Make sure that all prop-weapons such as swords or knives are flexible; so that they don't pose a threat when walking.

10. If there is no sidewalk available, you should walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic to keep your eyes on the cars coming toward you.

11. Wear light-reflective tape, or light colored clothing. You may even opt to tape a couple glow-sticks onto your child's costume.

12. Only approach houses that are well-lit, staying away from houses that might look shady or out-of-place.

13. Do not approach any stray or unfamiliar animals.

14. Make sure to feed your child before setting out for trick-or-treating. It will help to stave off any post-dinner hunger pangs. Which will enable you to check the candy prior to them eating it!

15. If your children are trick-or-treating alone, give them a roll of quarters so that they can call home. These children should be in their pre-teen to teenage years, so any child under this age should be accompanied by an adult.

16. Always, and I mean ALWAYS check the candy prior to your children eating any. While tampering is a rarity, it still happens. For this reason if you have children who are going out on their own, tell them the importance of investigating the treats before eating them.

Find the Best Santa Suit With These Helpful Steps

There is a lot to be done when the holidays come around the corner. People go and bu gifts. Some go to parties. People celebrate by doing all kinds of things. There are even people who dress up for the season! they can be dressed like anything from elves to reindeer. There are also people who enjoy dressing like the jolly old elf himself, Santa. If you would like to know to make your very own santa suit then read on and I will tell you how!

How do I make my suit? What do I use to make it?

The first thing to do is find your supplies. I would get cotton, glue that can be used on skin, a pillow, and some red cloth and sewing materials. You could just buy the parts separately as well but where's the fun in that?

Step one is to make your suit. This part will be the hardest as it will require you to know how to sew. Sew red cloth together to make a full body suit but leave some extra space around the gut unless your own suffices. Also sew a little hat and make it form a pyramid to the tip. After you suit is complete keep in mind what the pillow is for. It's to give you your jolly Santa gut!

The next step is to make the beard. Do this my taking cotton and stretching it out and making it fluffy. Make sure you leave a space for your mouth so you can have a mustache as well. Then use your special glue to put it on your face!. You will also need to attach some cotton to the top of your hat.

That is how you make a Santa suit. It isn't too difficult and you can add more to it at your leisure. With time you can have the best suit ever!

Organizing After Christmas

Organizing any time of year can sometimes be a challenge. After Christmas though, you might find yourself with a bigger mess than before. These tips will help you get organized in the new year.

1. Start with Decorations

If you have a fake tree, you'll need to find a good place to store it. Always keep the box it came in, you might just be able to put it back in. Many of the newer models have just a few parts and are very easy to get back in the box.

Ornaments can be tricky, as you don't want them to break. Use bubble wrap or even wrapping paper to individually wrap them so they don't touch. We've had pretty good luck with this tactic over the years, and very little ornaments have gotten broken.

You can also look for special containers to put ornaments in their own compartments for storage. These are becoming quite popular in stores.

2. Storage for New Toys

If you have kids, chances are you have lots of new toys to find homes for. This might be a good time to rearrange rooms and buy some new storage units. For the time being, make use of all the boxes you now have left over from gifts. Sort toys by type, getting the kids involved so they know where their toys are suppose to go.

This is also a good time of year to sort through toys your kids don't play with anymore. Get rid of anything they really don't want or need, and give it to kids who need it more. You could donate them to doctors offices, churches, or the salvation army.

3. Storage for Your New Toys

This one is a bit more tricky, as you can't always just throw your new toys in a box. But just like the kids rooms, you might have to do some rearranging in the house. You might also need to buy new storage units such as shelves or cabinets. Not only will it get you more organized, but it will add nice decoration to your house as well.

Above all, make sure you take it one step at a time. While it only took a day or two to make this mess, it's going to take a little more time to clean it up. Pick a project and work on it until it's done, then move on to the next. Good luck!

Tips For Turning Your Backyard Into a Hummingbird Habitat

Hummingbirds notoriously have a high wing-beat rate, and it is its fast wing-beat rate that generates the hum for which the hummingbird is named.

High Metabolism Rate

The largest of hummingbirds, the Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas), grow to be about 24g and have an average wing-beat rate of 8-10 beats per second. Mid-sized hummingbirds, the Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), grow to weigh about 3g and beat their wings at a rate of 20-25 beats per second. The smallest species of hummingbirds, the Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae), only grow to approximately 1.8g, and yet they beat their wings at about 70 beats per second.

One might wonder how a hummingbird could generate such an incredibly fast wing-beat rate, but this kind of metabolism is very similar to the energy derived by giving a three-year-old child a can of Mountain Dew to drink. The high sugar-intake taken by the child creates a situation where the child seems to bounce off the walls. Well, the same thing happens with the hummingbird too.

Each day, hummingbirds of all species consume more than the equivalent of their own body weight in nectar, which has an average sugar content of 25%. This high daily sugar-intake results in an extremely high metabolism rate for these tiny birds - the highest in all of the animal kingdom. According to a 2001 book, "The Birds of Ecuador volume 2 - Field Guide", written by Robert S. Ridgely and Paul G. Greenfield, a hummingbirds' heart beat has been measured as high as 1260 beats per minute!

Interestingly, other organisms that metabolize at a rate equal to the hummingbird typically have a very short-lifespan. But, hummingbirds have lived in captivity for up to 17 years.

Flower Pollination

It has been estimated that the average hummingbird will visit 100 flowers per day, pollinating many flowers as they go. But with most flower species, the hummingbird has to compete directly with bees and wasps for access to the nectar.

Interestingly, bees and hummingbirds tend to avoid flowers that have a sugar-ratio in the range of 15%, which is average for most flowers. Instead, bees and hummingbirds tend to only pollinate flowers that have the higher 25% sugar content in the nectar.

Most of the flowers that hummingbirds pollinate are red, bright pink and orange in color. An interesting twist in this story is that hummingbirds can view wavelengths into the near ultra-violet. Insect-pollinated flowers tend to reflect certain wavelengths, which tip off the insects that those flowers are inviting the insects to visit. But the flower species that hummingbirds typically pollinate do not reflect the same wavelengths as other flower species do, which in effects makes those flowers invisible to passing insects.

Of course, while the hummingbirds need to visit flowers to obtain the sugars they need to properly metabolize energy for flight, nectar does not provide enough nutrients to ensure good health. Hummingbirds meet their dietary needs for protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, etc. by preying on insects and spiders, especially when they are feeding young.

Range Of The Species

Until recently, it was believed that hummingbirds were strictly an American bird, ranging from Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. But in 2004, Dr. Gerald Mayr, a paleornithologist at the famed Senckenberg museum in Germany, found a 30-million year old hummingbird fossil that had been unearthed in a dig near Heidelberg, Germany.

The majority of the 325-340 species of hummingbirds reside in warm tropical areas of Central and South America. But those species that can be found on the southern tip of South America and those species that take up residence in North America are typically migratory birds.

While hummingbirds are typically at rest, except when feeding, hummingbirds are known to cross great bodies of water, including the Gulf of Mexico. That is the reason why many hummingbird species can also be found in many Caribbean islands.

Common North American Species

Although 17 hummingbird species have been known to nest in North America, only a few are considered common. Most frequently seen in North America are the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the Black-chinned Hummingbird, the Rufous Hummingbird, the Anna's Hummingbird, the Broad-tailed hummingbird, and the Calliope hummingbird. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is most frequently found east of the Mississippi River. The Black-chinned Hummingbird is most often found in the western United States. The Rufous Hummingbird is found most often in the Northwest all the way to Alaska. The Anna's Hummingbird is common from southern California to southern Arizona and north to southwestern British Columbia. The Broad-tailed hummingbird is common in the spring and summer in higher elevations from Arizona north to the Canadian border. And the Calliope hummingbird is found through-out the west except for the Southwest and the Pacific Coast.

Attracting Hummingbirds To Your Garden

In order to attract hummingbirds to your garden you must provide them the nectar producing flowers that they desire. There are quite a variety of blooming plants and you will want ones specific to where you live so do a little research for "hummingbird flowers" in your area and most likely your local nursery will offer them. As a final touch add a couple of pretty hummingbird feeders and you are set.

Interestingly, the combination of people planting winter flower gardens and providing hummingbird feeders has encouraged more hummingbirds to make North America their year-around homes in the temperate areas along the Gulf and Pacific coasts.

You will want to be very selective when picking a hummingbird feeder as many models simply do not do this beautiful bird justice. The fact is that many hummingbird feeders force the hummingbirds to compete with bees, wasps, ants, orioles, woodpeckers, and other animals for access to the sugar water. Bees, wasps and ants can get trapped in some types of feeders and die inside which of course ruins the nectar.

Protecting The Health Of Your Hummingbirds

Studies have shown the best formula for sugar water to be one cup of "white granulated sugar only" to four cups of water, mixed and placed into the feeder. The feeder should be emptied and washed with dish soap and hot water at least once per week, to prevent harmful bacteria build-up or soured sugar water.

For the health of your neighborhood hummingbirds, you should never use any raw sugars, brown sugar, powdered sugar, honey, or any additives in your sugar water mix. All contain other elements that will be to the detriment of any hummingbirds consuming these products.

Commercial "hummingbird food" products have not been studied at length, but early studies with laboratory animals indicate that preservatives, artificial flavors, and food coloring cause disease and premature mortality, when it is consumed in large amounts. So, it is strongly recommended that you do not add red food coloring to your sugar water mix. Scientists also recommend that you do not need to buy any "hummingbird food" that has "additional nutrients" in it, because hummingbirds get all of the nutrients that they need in the insects that they eat.

Selecting A Good Hummingbird Feeder

There are a number of companies providing hummingbird feeders in the marketplace. But for the benefit of your neighborhood birds, you should try to keep an eye to finding a feeder that has certain features and benefits.

Remember, your local birds are competing with bees, wasps and ants for access to the food in your feeder. So, it is advantageous when you can find a feeder that is designed to restrict these insects from gaining access to the sugar water mix.

Most feeders have some red or orange colorations, because these colors attract hummingbirds. But, make sure that the feeders you buy do not have any yellow parts on the feeder itself, because bees are attracted to the color yellow. Even if you can block the bees from gaining access to the feeder, the yellow will attract the bees to the feeder, and the bees will frequently drive away the hummingbirds.

Make sure that any feeder you own does not leak sugar water onto the ground or the outside of the unit, because once again, you should desire to keep bees, wasps and other pests away from your feeders.

The point of a feeder is to attract the right kind of visitors, not the wrong kinds. If your hummingbird feeder attracts the wrong kind of visitor, the birds will have their feeding experience ruined, and you may be finding yourself wrestling with too many pests in your environment too.

How to Plan a Homemade Christmas

Remember the days of popcorn and cranberry garland and paper snowflakes on the window? With everyone thinking frugally this holiday season, an old-fashioned homemade Christmas is making a comeback. But how do you plan a homemade Christmas that is fun, simple and still beautiful? Following are a few easy to make ideas for holiday goodies.

Homemade Decorations

Making holiday decorations by hand is an activity that not only produced unique Christmas creations but can also bring the whole family together. Stringing cranberries to wrap around the Christmas tree is always fun. All you need is some thick thread or string, a bag of fresh raw cranberries and a large craft needle for each person. Thread the string and gently stick the needle through the center of each cranberry.

For the windows you can make paper snowflakes. Children as young as three or four can help create one-of-a-kind designs in plain white paper. Adults then can cut the designs out and unfold the paper to produce beautiful snowflakes for the window panes.

Homemade Cards

Family and close friends will appreciate handmade cards much more than the generic store-bought ones. If you have children, you can have them draw or paint pictures on the front. You can also draw or paint to decorate the cards. Or you can stencil a pattern yourself if you lack artistic ability. Don't forget to write a little holiday message on the inside of the card with your signature.

Homemade Desserts/Goodies

Break out Grandma's old recipes and whip up a batch of gingerbread men. Sugar cookies are fun because you can use cookie cutter to make holiday shapes and then your choose of extras to decorate the cookies to your liking. Fudge is always a family favorite and there are almost endless flavor possibilities.

Homemade Presents

Gifts that are made by hand can be a bit trickier. After all you don't want to look cheap but you also don't want to spend an arm and leg making a gift with saving money is the goal. As a writer one of my favorite handmade gifts is a personalized poem or bit of prose printed out on special fancy paper purchased at an office supply store and placed in a nice frame bought at the local dollar store for half what it is worth. Another simple gift idea is a gift jar. You can fill a jar with the dry ingredients to a favorite recipe (the recipient's favorite, not yours).

Dress up the outside of the jar with a piece of fabric over the lid and a pretty ribbon around the rim. Finish it off with a printed card of the recipe on one side and a holiday design on the other.

Homemade holidays don't have to take a lot of skill or talent to pull off. All you need is some time, willingness and a good Christmas spirit.

Why Do We Celebrate Grandparents Day?

Grandparents Day began with the idea of honoring the elderly and championing the cause of the lonely in nursing and retirement homes. Marian McQuade, a housewife from West Virginia, brainstormed the idea, which was later to become a nationally recognized holiday, thanks to Jimmy Carter in 1978. Now the holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, in September one of the first holidays of the school year that greatly affects most students.

McQuade, the original founder of Grandparents Day, is the mother of fifteen children, grandmother of forty, and great-grandmother of three. With so many descendants, she was well aware of the special bond that children should have with their grandparents. While mothers and fathers are the main source of discipline and example in a child's life, his or her grandparents have a profound affect on viewpoints. Without the wisdom of the grandparents, many children today wouldn't understand what it was like to grow up without the technology and amenities of today's world and wouldn't appreciate what they have nearly as much.

Another reason to celebrate our grandparents on Grandparents Day is simply because they help to raise us and shape us into the men and women we will become. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, and in many families, grandparents baby-sit and share in the responsibility of "bringing up baby". With both parents entering the workforce today, coupled with rising daycare costs, retired grandparents have become perhaps the most dependable source of daily child care, meaning they are becoming more prominent in children's lives. And, while they've already raised a family of their own, most grandparents are willing and even eager to take part in their grandchildren's care and development.

Grandparents are extraordinary people. They have stories to tell that expand our horizons and views of life formed through years of experience that we cannot begin to fathom. We should feel lucky to benefit from this, and our grandparents feel privileged to be able to share these experiences with us. Overall, grandparents are a great resource for us, and if we can celebrate mothers and fathers, we can definitely recognize grandparents for their achievements in life.

How Can You Forget About Forgetting Birthdays - Three Easy Ways To Remember Birthdays

Remembering someone's birthday is the easiest way to make someone feel special but often it's the most difficult thing to do. The only birthday we tend to remember without much difficulty is our own! Birthday is one of those wonderful occasions on which everybody wants to get a little pampered and spoiled but if you don't even remember that it's the birthday of some one close to you, well...obviously he won't feel very good about it.

How would you feel, if you expect someone to wish you on your birthday and you end up knowing that he or she doesn't even bother to remember that day. It's certainly a nice sensation to receive loads of birthday wishes from friends and family members; it makes you feel loved and cared for. Wishing some one happy birthday or sending a nice little happy birthday ecard on that very day makes the birthday boy or girl glow in the warmth of love and affection. But what if with all your sincere love and longing you end up forgetting the birthday of your near and dear ones? A few simple steps can help you avoid such an awkward situation.

The conventional way of remembering birthday is what our grandparents have been doing for ages. All you need to do is keep a little note book. It's best if you can get hold of one of those tiny winy year planners. Just write down the name of your closest friends and family members, along with the date on which they were born and make a habit of checking the note book every three or four days. It's an excellent idea provided you remember checking out the note book regularly.

Another way of remembering birthday is quite similar to the former method but the new technology has made it a lot more easy. Simply install a reminder software and key in the birthday details that you want to remember and your computer will do the rest.

But if you don't want go in to all that hassle of working with a reminder-software, the best possible way to never regret for not remembering someone's birthday is to opt for an online free birthday ecard site, which lets you choose a specific future date to send the ecard. Some of the online free ecard sites have the option of assigning a post date on which the receiver will get the ecard in his or her inbox.

All you need to do once you visit the free ecard site, is to choose the birthday ecard that you think is ideal for that person; personalize the ecard with your warm and heartfelt birthday wish and then choose the date of that person's birthday, which can even be a month away and the free birthday ecard with your own personal message will be sent on that chosen date! You just sit in front of the computer once a month and send all those birthday wishes all at once and each one of them will receive your birthday ecard precisely on their birthday!

Now when he or she calls you up, all excited and thank you for remembering the date and making the birthday really special by sending the ecard right on the birthday, you can enjoy the feeling of making some one feel special and cheerful and all that with very little effort from your side.

4 Christmas Hacks

Looking for ways to make the holiday season a little less stressful? I don't blame you. After all, it's supposed to be the most wonderful time of year, yet many of us find ourselves running for the bottle of Excedrin as soon as the holidays hit.

Well, put your pill bottle away and get ready to make the holidays a bit easier this year with these four easy Christmas hacks.

1. It's Not REALLY His Birthday Anyway

Got a bit of rebel inside of you? Then take a stand and celebrate Christmas at the beginning of January (or December 28th or 29th) instead of on Christmas day .

Why?

Because you'll be able to buy all of your Christmas presents at a discount since stores will be trying to get rid of leftover inventory.

Celebrating Christmas after the actual holiday also ensures that everyone you invite to your Christmas party will likely be able to come since they won't have other Christmas invitations for the same day.

2. Run Away From The Pack

Repeat after me... "I do NOT need a PS3 just because everyone else wants one. It is okay and it will not kill me if I don't get a PS3 until February, March, April or even next July."

When you see the Stepford shoppers standing in endless lines waiting for a PS3, resist the temptation to join them. Yes, it'd be fun to have one. No, you don't NEED one.

Spending hour after hour trying to track down the needle in the haystack during one of the most stressful times of the year is not time well spent (and spending thousands of dollars for a $600 game system on eBay is just ridiculous). Do yourself a favor. Forego the PS3 until things settle down.

3. Shop Online

Want to get your all of your Christmas shopping done in less than a day without getting out of your pajamas?

Thanks to the Internet, you can.

You'll find that amazing deals are available online, which means you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to take advantage of them.

Do yourself a favor. Instead of waking up early in the morning to fight the crowds and the cold, make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and plop yourself down in front of the computer. Browse the online stores and rack up the deals from home. It will make your Christmas shopping much, much easier.

4. Take Pride In Who You Are (and Who You Aren't)

If you are one of the women who feels badly when the little miss Martha Stewart of the party brings the hostess a beautiful array of hand-decorated Christmas cookies, or if you're one of the men who gets a bit embarrassed because his Christmas decorations don't compete with the decorations of the other guys on the block, stop being embarrassed about who you are.

So what if you can't create a six-foot-tall Christmas tree cake? Give the hostess of the party a box of bakery cookies with a ribbon on top. Just because your lights don't shine as bright as the next guy's doesn't mean you don't have holiday spirit. Put your decorations up on time and take em down on time and that's all that really matters.

Shouldn't we all outgrow the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality? Especially during Christmas?

This year keep the true spirit of Christmas in mind. While everyone else is running around like mad trying to make their Christmas the epitome of perfection, use these Christmas hacks and enjoy your holiday season the way you're supposed to -- with the true spirit of Christmas in your heart.
